Freedom Optimized Winch Rope 3/8 x 80’ for internal braked winches.

Freedom Recovery Gear Ltd.  3/8” Optimized Winch Rope  with MBS of 17,000 lbs and WLL of 3,400 Lbs is made from A combination of 2 high strength synthetic Ropes, Dyneema® SK-78  and Vectro-12. These 2 ropes have very different qualities that when spliced together make a superior winch line for an internal braked winch. The Main section of the winch line is made from SupreemX-12 which has been coated in a variety of hi visibility colours, the Black Vectro-12, possesses A heat resistance of double other Synthetic Ropes with a melting point of approx. 550 degrees F , it is ideal for the first base wrap of your winch drum. Winches with internal Brakes (most) can build up significant heat that can compromise the strength of normal synthetic rope. Vectro-12 Addresses this with its unique formula.

Characteristics

  • Extremely high strength
  • Light weight (1/7 weight of steel)
  • Abrasion resistant
  • Low stretch
  • Floats in water
  • Extremely Flexible

We start of our winch lines with a gusseted powder coated stainless steel tube thimble which is followed by a locking splice to prevent any possibility of slippage during the life of the rope then to give it maximum strength we follow up with a proper length tail burry ( over 2 fids ) with a long smooth taper  for the transition. This burry and tapper is what maintains the ropes integrity and the splice its strength. Further Down the rope we transition to the Vecro-12 and again you will see more than 2 fids ( yes a fid is a measurement in splicing, it varies with the diameter of the rope. ) on either side of the splice the Splice under tension will not slip, we hand stich each rope which is to prevent slippage if the rope is ever manipulated when loose. As we progress, approximately 10.5’ from the end of the rope we place a high visibility thread this threads is placed at the point where there should be a minimum of 11 wraps on your winch drum. This is the minimum recommended to prevent slippage on a synthetic winch line. Our standard end of winch line terminates in a small loop for use with a Zeon style attachment. If you do not need this simply snip the tread and pull out the loop before attaching to your winch drum.

Like all of our hand made products our winch lines are mechanically pre-tensioned during our Quality Control Process and are ready to use once spooled onto your winch.

So why do we make a 80’ winch line?

Simple mechanical advantage. Your winch capacity is rated for your first wrap ( when you can see the Winch Drum ) each layer of rope diminishes your winch capacity by about 15% ! so a 10k winch with 5 layers can have a usable capacity of less than half its rated capacity!

Lets face it if you only pull out a little line to get yourself unstuck, your winch has to work really hard and may not be able to overcome the resistance to get you out.  For example Layer 5 may be  4400lb capacity on a 10000k winch  but if you have less line on your drum and pull out only a little but your starting your pull  in layer 3 you’ll have 50%  more capacity at about 6100 lbs.

The more the mechanical advantage you give yourself the better of you are less draw on the electrical system (battery and alternator), less heat build-up in your winch motor.

If you need more length simply add in a winch line extender, there much quicker to store than respooling long winch lines.

With a Minimum Break Strength (MBS) independently tested and rated as an assembly at 16000 lbs this is an excellent replacement on winches up to 10000 lbs.

What is Dyneema® SK-78?

Dyneema® SK-78 fibre is currently one of the strongest and most functional rope available for vehicle recovery and winching purposes. The rope used in all Freedom Recovery Gear products is Made in Canada from European sourced fibre – this is the most consistent and reliable Dyneema® fibre currently available anywhere.

Dyneema® SK-78 has many advantages over the standard wire rope (aka galvanized aircraft cable) that is commonly provided by winch manufacturers – light weight, abrasion resistance, low stretch (very little elastic recoil), doesn’t twist (torque) under load, doesn’t have sharp ‘burrs’ that can cut skin and hands when you’re using it.

Being 1/7th the weight of wire rope, it is immediately noticeable when handling the rope, it’s easy to carry and move, it bends and flexes easily, it’s does not absorb water and it floats.

If you have used other brands of synthetic winch lines, soft shackles, or winch extensions, you will really appreciate the quality and attention to detail that Freedom Recovery Gear puts in to their products.

MINIMUM BREAKING STRENGTH (MBS) IS THE MINIMUM FORCE NECESSARY TO CAUSE A PIECE OF RECOVERY GEAR TO FAIL.

Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum working load designed by the manufacturer. This load represents a force that is much less than that required to make the lifting equipment fail or yield.

In line with the Cordage Institute Guidelines CI 1401-19 Recommended Safety Practices for use of Fiber rope. We apply a Design Factor DF 5:1 to our Soft Shackles, winch lines and Winch Line Extensions.

As an Example, that mean a product with a Minimum Break Strength  of 40,000 lbs would have a Working load Limit of 8000 lbs
